According to AAA Carolinas approximately 865,000 Carolinians will travel 50 or more miles this coming holiday weekend with a majority of those travelling by car. That number is up three percent from last year.
With the higher than normal amount of cars on the roadways there are greater chances of being the victim of a motor vehicle crash. Some tips as stated by the NC DOT:
Buckle Up;
- Don’t drink and drive;
- Stay alert;
- Obey the speed limit;
- Minimize distractions.

Week of March 21, 2011
March 21 – Cary, NC - Pickup truck crashes on the median to US 1 near Cary Crossroads around 12:20 am and rolls several times. According to news reports, at least three were inside the truck with one of them going to the hospital. The driver of the truck was arrested at the scene.
March 21 – Harnett County, NC – On Elevation Road in Angier, a paint contractor’s van ran off the road and hit a tree. The driver was pinned in the vehicle. Witnesses reported the driver’s wife was at the scene. Unfortunately, the driver dies shortly after EMS arrived.
March 23 – Durham, NC – A school aged girl was struck by another vehicle while trying to get on the school bus on Wednesday morning.
March 23 – Fayetteville, NC – Police reported that a father (the driver) and his seven year old daughter were shot after being rear ended by a the car behind them.
March 23 – Apex, NC – A crash occurred at the 1900 block of Old Raleigh Road in Apex, NC resulting in at least one death.
March 23 – Henderson, NC – A driver of the vehicle which struck a pedestrian was pulled from his car by bystanders and severely beaten. All six suspects of the beating have been arrested according to authorities.
March 26 – Franklin County, NC - A multi car crash in Louisburg around the 700 block of Bunn Elementary School Road sent six people to the hospital. According to reports three adults and three infants suffered serious injuries.

According to www.city-data.com, the number of fatal car accidents in 2008 for Raleigh, NC is listed at 31. This number is up slightly from the fatal accident count in 2007, which was reported as 27. One alarming statistic involves the number of fatal accidents caused by drunken drivers: 15 in 2008. Although an otherwise small number, this statistic is up from 0 accidents caused by drunken drivers in 2007. Overall, the number of 2008 car accident fatalities in Raleigh, NC is listed at 37 (28 in 2007), both numbers being well below the average fatal accident count in the state of North Carolina. Raleigh also had its share of fatal accidents involving pedestrians, listed at 13 in 2008 and 15 in 2007.
