Hit and Run Accident in NC

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C.- Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a hit and run they say killed a woman early Wednesday morning. Troopers in Craven County say it happened just after four o'clock on Hwy 17 near Wilmar Rd. Investigators tell us 25-yr-old Jennifer Lynn Bond of Williamston was run over by two different vehicles.
Witnesses say Jennifer Bond had been lying in the middle of the highway for only a few minutes.
"I seen a truck come by and run right over her,” said Justin Dickens.
"And then as we were calling for help, another car came by and ran over her again,” said Sherri Kite.
Highway Patrol Trooper Stephen Brown says investigators found a couple of beer cans and a bottle of prescription anxiety medication with Bond's name on it. Neighbors say they watched as Bond passed out here in the road, but they say what led up to that is even more disturbing.
Justin Dickens says it was going on 4AM when Bond knocked on his door. His wife answered and stepped outside to talk with her. "She come out and spoke to the girl and said, ‘I just been raped. Can I use your phone?’"
Kite told us, "She said she was raped and dropped off and that she needed help but then she didn't want to come down here and get the phone."
That's when witnesses watched Bond walk back across the highway and collapse. Brown says a commercial truck never stopped nor even braked before it hit her.
"It's going to be almost impossible to get stopped if you're not going 55,” said Brown. “Even with low lighting, it's going to be tough."
He says the second driver, 21-yr-old Amber Taylor of Chocowinity was going the speed limit when she hit bond. Troopers say she pulled over for a moment before driving off, but later reported the incident.
Witnesses say they couldn't believe what they saw, and they’ll never forget it.
"I went over there and checked her vitals after the second car hit her and realized that she was gone, but it’s sad,” said Kite. “Not something you want to wake up at 4 o'clock in the morning to."
Trooper Brown tells us the minimum charge both drivers could face is leaving the scene of an accident. A medical examiner will do an autopsy. So far, no one has been charged.
