Greensboro, NC -- Two Greensboro police officers were treated for minor injuries Tuesday afternoon after their car was struck while they were chasing a suspect.
The crash happened at the intersection of Meadowview Drive and Randleman Road around 4:20 Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators say officers Joe Brown and J.B. Hartong were in the same patrol car chasing 23-year-old Jayquann Smith. He was wanted on several drug trafficking charges.
According to the crash report, the officers were traveling east on Meadowview Road during the chase. Witnesses said the police car slowed to a near stop when it got to the Randleman Road interchange.
The report shows that officers waited for approaching traffic to stop before proceeding through the intersection. At that time, a 1996 Buick, driven by Michael Kelly, was traveling south on Randleman Road. The driver said he did not see the officer's car and hit it.
A third car, a 2008 Toyota, was behind the Buick. That driver swerved to avoid the crash but ended up hitting the Buick anyway.
The two officers were taken to Moses Cone Hospital and were treated for minor injuries.
The crash report lists the Buick traveling at 25mph at the time of the collision. The officer's car was listed as going 5mph.
The initial suspect the officers were pursuing, Jayquan Smith, was eventually caught. He was not involved in the crash.
In addition to the drug charges, Smith was charged with fleeing to elude arrest, resisting an officer, and two counts of assault on a government official with a deadly weapon.
Smith is being held at the Guilford County Jail on $150,000 bond.
Greensboro Police spokeswoman Susan Danielson said that none of the drivers involved in the crash have been charged at this time. The crash is still under investigation.
