A gas leak on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh forced evacuations at businesses and the library at NC State's campus.

The accident left Senior David Simpson waiting for the bookstore or library to reopen. Raleigh Fire Department Battalion Chief, Rob Johnson says the leak was shut off quickly and no one was injured.

"A lot of equipment and excitement, but it did turn out positive," Johnson said.

PSNC Energy Spokeswoman, Angie Townsend says 75 percent of the damage to their lines comes from contractors. She says the accident on Hillsborough Street could have been prevented.

"The contractor working today didn't have current locate ticket which means they had not called to have us come out and mark the line," Townsend said.

Townsend says they work with local contractors to educate them about calling their 811 number to have underground utilities located for free.

Homeowners are also encouraged to call 811 before they start any yard projects such as planting trees or putting in a fence.
