A 47-year-old man was killed and a 10-year-old passenger injured in a single-vehicle crash. The badly wrecked vehicle hit a tree and burst into flames in front of Jeffreys Grove Elementary School in North Raleigh, police said.

The accident occurred just after 8 a.m. in the 6100 block of Jeffreys Grove School Road, near the intersection of Eddystone Drive, according to a police accident made public Wednesday afternoon.

The man, Luca Melloni of 102 English Ivy Drive in Durham, was traveling south in a 2004 Mitsubishi with his 10-year-old son Gianluca Melloni, when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, near the entrance of the elementary school, police reported.

Witnesses told police that the car traveled about 126 feet along the right shoulder of the road before it struck a no parking sign. The car swerved back onto the road and traveled more than 100 feet across two lanes of traffic before it left the left side of the road and collided with a tree near the entrance of the elementary school, police reported.

Gianluca Melloni was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

The accident is under investigation.
